Over the past few years, the Indian-cinema has played a significant role on emphasizing on the lives of sports-stars. Typically, movies themed around biopics of reputed sports celebrities have resonated well among the audiences. The popularity of movies like MS Dhoni-The Untold Story, Mary Kom, Soorma and Bhag Milkha Bhag-among many others, are blatant testaments to the popularity of such films. Thankfully, a number of Bollywood celebrities have well-realized this successful trend, which has enabled fans to enjoy movies of the said-genre on a more-regular basis.

Jhulan Goswami emerged as one of the best woman-cricketers of her era. The Bengal-born pace bowler made her debut in 2002 against England. In her illustrious career, which spanned well-over 15 years, Goswami represented India in 10 tests, 182 ODIs and 68 T20Is. Her tally of 321 ODI wickets is the highest for any women’s cricketer on a global scale. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before the Bollywood could find a way to showcase her story on the silver-screen. 

That’s right; reports suggest that actress Anushka Sharma Kohli-wife of the Indian men’s cricket team captain, Virat Kohli-is all set to portray the legendary pacer’s  journey on the cinema-reel. Further, sources have speculated that Sony Pictures India (SPI) Managing Director, Vivek Krishnani, will deliver the much-awaited movie. 

Information available

As per available information, Anushka will reach Kolkata’s Eden Gardens Stadium later in the evening today to begin with the shooting. Reportedly, Jhulan herself will be present their to brief Anushka about the role. The Stadium’s ground and dressing room have already been cleared-up to help with the shooting. It has been further speculated that Jhulan would even accompany Anushka to Mumbai for the later parts of the movie. 

Jhulan announced her retirement from the T20 format right before the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies. While she’s still available for the other formats, realistically, at 37 years of age, she seems to have moved on, with her focus now being on coaching roles.  Presently, she does Bengali commentary for Star Sports India. 

At the moment, not much information is available about the film. Interestingly, the film’s development comes as one of India’s first ever biopic on a woman-cricketer. Also, the film’s release schedule looks lined-up with former men’s captain Kapil Dev’s biopic, which will premier this year. Actor Ranveer Singh will portray the legendary all-rounder’s character in that movie.
