Nowadays, cricketers often prefer T20I cricket over red-ball cricket for several reasons. Red-ball cricket requires more time, while ODI and T20 formats are shorter and more lucrative. Many players choose to focus on T20 leagues due to better financial opportunities. However, some star players want to play Test cricket but aren’t fitting into the team. Glenn Maxwell is one such player.

Maxwell is a key member of Australia’s ODI and T20I teams, but he’s been absent from Test cricket since 2017. It’s not that Maxwell is opting out of red-ball cricket; the real reason is a lack of opportunities due to occupied spots. Meanwhile, reports suggest he’s set to make his long-awaited comeback in the series against Sri Lanka in 2025.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, CA’s selection chairman George Bailey is considering including Glenn Maxwell in the Test team. Australia will tour Sri Lanka in January 2025 for two test games. Before the Test series against Sri Lanka, the Aussies will host the Indian cricket team in a five-match Test series concluding on January 7, 2025.

Glenn Maxwell last wore the baggy green in September 2017 against Bangladesh. He was recalled to the Test team in 2022 during Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka, but didn’t play. This time, Maxwell is expected to get a chance in the lower middle order and could be useful with the ball in Sri Lanka’s spin-friendly conditions.

Maxwell has been eyeing a Test comeback for a long time. “There aren’t many spots up for grabs for home Tests, but I know that on a subcontinent tour, I can be a viable option to fill a role in the side,” Maxwell said last year.”

However, to fulfill his Test dream, Maxwell may have to give up the playoffs stage of the Big Bash League 2024-25 season. As a key player for the Melbourne Stars, he could miss the playoffs, which are scheduled to overlap with Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka.
