India’s brightest prospect Shubman Gill has been the most consistent batsman in the ongoing calendar year as he piled up 1230 runs at an average of 72.35. It is worth noting that he is the only cricketer to complete 1,000 runs in 2023, which goes to show how good he has been with the bat for India. He smashed five centuries, five fifties and a double century this year. The cricket fraternity expected him to feature against Australia in Chennai.

All of a sudden, Shubman Gill was feeling under the weather and the BCCI sources confirmed that Gill has been suffering from dengue fever, which saw him miss India’s World Cup 2023 opener against Australia. Just before the game, Rohit Sharma confessed that Shubman Gill wasn’t ruled out yet for the Australia match. However, as it turned out, the youngster failed to mark his presence as Ishan Kishan opened the game alongside Rohit Sharma.

Recently, the BCCI source stated that Shubman Gill could not travel with the team to Delhi for the Afghanistan clash due to his condition. Shubman Gill who has been hospitalized in Chennai is currently being supervised by the doctors. The report claimed that the cricketer’s blood platelet count dropped to 70,000 due to dengue and once the platelet count goes beyond 1,00,000, he will be released from the hospital.

Ruturaj Gaikwad or Yashasvi Jaiswal may be called in as a back-up for Shubman Gill

The report stated that Shubman Gill remains a doubtful starter for the India vs Pakistan World Cup 2023 match. Meanwhile, a report from the Indian Express stated that Ruturaj Gaikwad or Yashasvi Jaiswal may be called in as a cover for Shubman Gill and the final decision will be taken by the Indian think-tank.

“Medical advice given to the team management is to avoid flying when the platelet count is down. Earlier on Monday, the BCCI issued a statement confirming that Gill will not be available for the Delhi game,” the report stated.

“The India opener was admitted to Kaveri Hospital on Monday morning and is currently under the care of medical specialists at the facility. Dr Rizwan Khan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doctor who has been travelling with the team, is also attending to the young opener, who missed India’s first World Cup game against Australia on Sunday,” the report added.
