Reports: Virat Kohli may opt for County Cricket over IPL 2025 Playoffs to save Test Career

After India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1, many players are facing intense criticism. Captain Rohit Sharma was sidelined after the fifth Test, and there were also questions raised about Virat Kohli’s average performance. Despite scoring a century in the first Test at Perth, the veteran batter managed only 190 runs in 9 innings. During this tour, Virat Kohli was consistently getting out to deliveries outside the off-stump, and most of his dismissals in this series were catches in the slip.

Virat Kohli May Play 2025 County Season

Virat’s performance was disappointing, and now his Test career is under threat as a talented pool of batters is warming the bench. According to a report by RevSportz, in order to overcome his weaknesses and prepare for the England Test series, Virat Kohli might play County Cricket.

The 2025 County season will begin on April 4 and conclude on September 27. The England vs India Test series will start on June 20. Since Virat Kohli has IPL commitments in April, it is clear that he won’t play the initial matches of County Cricket. The last County match before the India vs England Test series is scheduled for May 23, with the next fixture on June 22. Therefore, if Kohli wishes to play even a single County match, he will have to skip the IPL playoffs.

If Royal Challengers Bengaluru reaches the IPL playoffs and Virat Kohli is not there, it will be a blow to the franchise, as well as a heartbreak for the fans. However, at the same time, saving Test career is equally important to Virat Kohli.

However, it is not reported which team Virat Kohli may play for. In 2018, Surrey had approached Kohli to play matches in June, but due to a neck injury, Kohli was unable to make his County debut. Recently, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir advised the players bound for the India Test team to play in the Ranji Trophy. However, Virat Kohli has been away from domestic red-ball cricket for a long time. The last time Virat Kohli played in the Ranji Trophy was in 2012.
