Team India’s skipper Rohit Sharma played an exceptional knock in the Asia Cup 2023 game against Nepal on September 4 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. While Rohit’s knock helped the Indian team to defeat Nepal, it also allowed him to overtake Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record in the history of the Asia Cup.

Nepal had posted a total of 230 runs in 48.2 overs after which the two Indian openers batted for a couple of overs before the contest was affected by rain. The Men in Blue were given a DLS revised target of 145 runs in 23 overs.

Both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were aware of the required run rate and hence they displayed a positive intent right from the word go. The Indian openers went all guns blazing against a relatively inexperienced Nepal bowling lineup.

Rohit Sharma becomes the first Indian to score ten 50+ scores in Asia Cup

The Indian captain took on Nepal pacer Karan KC and smashed him for a couple of boundaries in the 5th over and made his intentions pretty clear. He then smoked a mighty six against Sandeep Lamichhane in the 7th over.

He didn’t stop there and kept on attacking the young leg-spinner. He smashed a four and a maximum on consecutive deliveries in the 11th over and reached close to his fifty.

In the 13th over, Rohit hit another four against pacer Sompal Kami and crossed the 50-run mark. This was Rohit’s 10th 50+ score in the Asia Cup which is the most by any Indian batter in the history of the continental championship.

With this fifty, Rohit Sharma overtook the long-standing record of Sachin Tendulkar who has 9 fifties against his name in the Asia Cup. Star batter Virat Kohli is at the third spot in the list with 8 half-centuries.

The Indian skipper remained unbeaten and took his side to a crucial victory which helped them reach the Super Fours stage of the Asia Cup 2023. He eventually scored 74 runs off just 59 balls with 6 fours and 5 mighty sixes.

Young Shubman Gill too got his form back as he scored an unbeaten 67 off only 62 deliveries including 8 boundaries and a maximum. The Indian team chased down the target set by Nepal in just 20.1 overs as none of the bowlers could get any success against the freely flowing Indian opening duo of Rohit and Gill.
