South Africa’s Dewald Brevis came into the limelight during the ICC U19 World Cup 2022, where he finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 506 runs. His batting style bore a striking resemblance to the legendary AB de Villiers, earning him the nickname “Baby AB”.

In the ongoing SA20 season, Dewald Brevis is playing for MI Cape Town. During the match against the Joburg Super Kings, he demonstrated that he not only excels in batting but also possesses AB de Villiers-like fielding skills.

Dewald Brevis grabs a Stunning Boundary Catch

In the 8th over of Joburg’s innings, Faf du Plessis played an inside-out lofted shot over cover off Kagiso Rabada’s delivery. Positioned at the boundary, Brevis timed his jump perfectly to catch the ball but, as he was running, his momentum was carrying him over the boundary line. Displaying remarkable awareness, he released the ball mid-air, stepped outside the boundary, and then dived back in with perfection to complete the catch inside the field of play.

What made this catch even more remarkable was that the outfield in Johannesburg was wet due to rain, yet Brevis displayed incredible presence of mind to pull off what seemed like an impossible catch. The effort was truly eye-pleasing, and fans on social media hailed the 22-year-old for his athleticism. Netizens are calling this catch a contender for the “Best Catch of the Year”.

This catch marked the end of Faf du Plessis’s 30-run innings. Joburg Super Kings were chasing a revised target of 136 runs in 19 overs due to rain. However, rain interrupted play again after 11.3 overs, and the match couldn’t resume. At that point, Super Kings were 6 runs ahead on the DLS method, securing them the victory in their very first match of the season.

With this, Dewald Brevis’s brilliant fielding effort went in vain. However, after going unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, Brevis has made a stellar comeback. In the SA20 season opener against Sunrisers Eastern Cape, he played a fantastic knock of 57 runs off just 29 balls and now he is making headlines with his stunning catch against Joburg Super Kings.
