Team India batsman Shikhar Dhawan and his wife Aesha Mukherji have parted ways after 9 years of marriage, based on some of Aesha’s recent Instagram posts. Earlier on Monday, Aesha, a former Australia-based professional boxer, broke the heartbreaking news of divorce with Shikhar Dhawan through an indirect post from her account.
“I thought divorce was a dirty word”- Aesha Mukherji on her second divorce with Shikhar Dhawan
“I THOUGHT DIVORCE WAS A DIRTY WORD UNTIL I BECAME A 2 TIME DIVORCEE”, Aesha captioned her emotional news on Instagram. Before her relationship with Dhawan, Aesha was married to an Australian businessman. The couple even had two daughters together, Rhea and Aliyah, who became a part of Dhawan and Aesha’s extended family once she had completed her first divorce.
“I felt as if I had let everyone down and even felt selfish”, Aesha wrote about her feelings after going through her first divorce. “I felt that I was letting my parents down, I felt that I was letting my children down and even to some extent, I felt as if I was letting God down. Divorce was such a dirty word.
“So now imagine, I have to go through it a second time. This is terrifying. Being divorced once already, I had a lot more at stake this time around. The fear, the failure, the disappointment…it was a hundred times worse. What does this mean for me? How does this define me and my relationship to marriage?”
According to some reports, Shikhar’s parents were opposed to their son and Aesha’s marriage because of their significant age difference. But ever since they tied the holy knot of matrimony back in 2012, Shikhar and Aesha entertained their fans with many cute and adorable social media moments. Aesha, her daughters, and her son with Shikhar, Zoravar, have been a part of several of her ex-husband’s memorable moments in international cricket and the IPL.
Shikhar, too, on his part, was a very caring and loving husband to his wife. Back in 2017, the dashing left-handed opener chose to withdraw his name from the home-series against Australia to tend to his unwell wife.
“Feel much more empowered now.”
“Well, once I went through the necessary actions and emotions of what had happened I was able to sit with myself and see that I was fine, I was actually doing great, even noticed my fear had totally disappeared. The remarkable thing is I actually felt much more empowered. I realised my fear and the meaning I gave to the word divorce was my own doing,” Aesha concluded optimistically on her Instagram post.

As of now, neither Aesha nor Shikhar have made any formal acknowledgement about this development. It remains to be seen whether this news affects Shikhar’s plans to participate in the second leg of the 2021 IPL and the T20 World Cup later in October this year.
