The Indian openers added 41 runs for the first wicket in just 7 overs after which Australian pacer Scott Boland came in to bowl the 8th over of the Indian innings. He bowled a good length delivery around the fifth stump line which took the edge of Gill’s bat and flew towards Cameron Green stationed at gully.
Green took an absolutely brilliant catch but the on-field umpires referred the catch to the third umpire, Richard Kettleborough. From certain camera angles, it appeared as if the ball had grazed the grass but Kettleborough was convinced that the catch was taken cleanly.
Richard Kettleborough stated that Cameron Green’s fingers were underneath the ball and hence ruled Gill out. However, it didn’t look like he had any conclusive evidence of it being a clean catch and still didn’t give the benefit of the doubt to the Indian opening batter.
After his controversial dismissal, Shubman Gill took to Instagram and posted the picture of the catch taken by Cameron Green and added 4 clap emojis in a sarcastic manner showing his disappointment over the dismissal. He also shared the same picture on his Twitter account where two ‘lens’ emojis and one ‘facepalm’ emoji and took a subtle dig at the third umpire.

Gill’s early dismissal made things tougher for Team India as they wanted a big opening partnership in order to chase down the target of 444 runs. The Indian team then faced the setbacks of losing skipper Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara in a quick succession allowing Australia to get into the driver’s seat.
