Earlier, before the start of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League, BCCI made few big changes in the rules. The soft signal rule elimination was one of the big decision which made a lot of headlines. Apart from this rule change, BCCI included a mandatorily time period rule for completing the inning. Teams who will complete 20 overs after the completion of the period, will be fined or their captain may get suspended for match under the slow over rate rule in IPL 2021- now question arising in the mind – what is this rule meaning in cricket?

Here is all you fans need to know about the S-O-R rule. According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, now each team will be given 90 minutes for completing an inning. It is worth mentioning that two strategic time-outs of each 2 and 1/2 minutes will be included in 90 minutes. If any team failed to complete 20 overs in 90 minutes, their will be punishment for the respective team.

According to IPL 2021 Code of Conduct, the minimum over-rate in this season will be 14.1 overs per hour ((ignoring the time taken by time-outs). Hence, each team will get 90 minutes for the completion of 20 overs.

“As a measure to control the match timings, the 20th over in each innings is now included in 90 minutes, earlier the 20th over was to start on or before the 90th minute. The minimum over rate to be achieved in IPL Matches shall be 14.11 overs per hour (ignoring the time taken by time-outs),” stated a BCCI rule as quoted by Cricbuzz.

BCCI has divided the punishment into three phases i.e. first offence, second offence, and third and for every next offence.

Penalties For Slow Over Rate

First Offence: RS. 12 lakh fine for the captain
Second Offence:

RS. 24 lakh fine for the captain

RS. 6 lakh or 25% match fee fine (whichever is lesser) for each member of the team excluding captain

Third & Each Subsequent Offence: RS. 30 lakh fine and one-match ban for the captain

RS. 12 lakh or 50% match fee fine (whichever is lesser) for each member of the team excluding captain

Note: If the skipper leaves captaincy to avoid the third offence

& the subsequent one-match ban, he will continue to
receive aforementioned sanctions unless bcci has in
writing about the confirmed change in captaincy

MS Dhoni Fined For Slow Over Rate In IPL 2021 (It’s Meaning in Cricket)

The start of the 14th edition has not come in a positive way for the Dhoni-led CSK. They not only lost the match but also get punishment for a slow over rate in IPL 2021. MS Dhoni fined INR 12 Lakh for violating the rule. While giving a statement on this BCCI also mentioned it is the first mistake hence punishing with only a fine on skipper.

“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr Dhoni was fined Rs 12 lakh,” a statement from the IPL read.

In the last season, when the matches were going beyond the schedule, the broadcaster has faced huge issues. Hence, this time IPL management made sure to complete the matches on time and came up with a strict rule. Now it will be the team captain’s resposibilty to manage the time properly.
