Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had a great outing at the IPL 2023 Players auction and left the arena as one of the most complete franchises having acquired the services of Harry Brook, Mayank Aggarwal, Heinrich Klassen and Adil Rashid.

However, their marquee acquisition of Heinrich Klaasen at the IPL auction 2023 was almost stolen from them, leaving Sun TV chairman’s daughter Kaviya Maran unimpressed.

The 2016 IPL champions opened the bidding for the twelfth entrant of the mini-auction; Kaviya Maran raised the paddle almost as soon as the name of Proteas wk-batsman Heinrich Klassen came up.

Hugh Edmeades (the auctioneer), however, failed to notice the first legal base price bid and instead registered Delhi Capitals’ follow-up bid as the first bid (1 CR). The formal battle between DC and KKR followed before Edmeades declared Klaasen as sold to Delhi for the price of INR 1.20 CR.

Kaviya Maran was left affronted at her bid not getting registered at the 2023 IPL auction and signalled to the auctioneer that she had also raised the paddle. The 30-year old businesswoman also sent one of the Sunrisers Hyderabad officials to the organizer’s desk to inform about the same.

Edmeades then re-opened the bidding and registered SRH’s bid as the next (1.30 CR). There was a fierce bidding battle between Delhi and Sunrisers Hyderabad following the incident with both franchises hellbent on buying the middle-order smacker. Maran was ultimately able to get Heinrich Klaasen to her side for the price of 5.25 CR.

Klaasen is expected to be in contention to be a regular starter for SRH at the 2023 IPL and will be competing against New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips to make the wk-batter spot his own.

Kaviya Maran was shrewd throughout the 2023 IPL auction. She at large stayed adrift of the mindless battle for all-rounders and instead chose to invest in specialist batsmen and bowlers.
