Sri Lanka’s Danushka Gunathilaka arrested by Sydney Police on rape charges, team leaves Australia without him

The cricketer was part of Sri Lanka squad which toured Australia for T20 World Cup 2022.

Sri Lanka’s batter Danushka Gunathilaka has been Arrested By Sydney Police And Charged Over Alleged Sexual Assault.

The Sri Lankan team have now left Australia without Gunathilaka as they’ve been eliminated from the World Cup.

Gunathilaka has been accused of sexually assaulting a 29-year-old woman on November 2. The Sri Lanka batter had reportedly met the woman through a dating app where they exchanged messages a few days back. He was arrested and taken to Sydney City police station on November 5 and an investigation has been started about the assault.

A source close to the Sri Lankan team told PTI,”Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested for an alleged rape. The Sri Lankan team has left Australia without him.”

Gunathilaka was a part of the Sri Lankan team against Namibia in the first round of the World Cup but couldn’t continue in the next games as he was ruled out due to an injury. However, the left-handed batter was in Australia with the team along with a few more injured players.

The New South Wales Police have also confirmed charges on a Sri Lankan national on their website. However, the name of the accused hasn’t been disclosed yet. “Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a Sri Lankan national following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s east last week,” the report said.

“The woman met with the man after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application. As part of ongoing investigations, a crime scene examination was undertaken by specialist police at an address in Rose Bay yesterday. Following further inquiries, a 31-year-old man was arrested at a hotel on Sussex Street, Sydney, shortly before 1 AM today (Sunday 6 November 2022),” the report added.

The Sri Lankan team was eliminated from the World Cup on Saturday as they were defeated by England and were left with just four points. Hence, New Zealand and England were through to the semifinals. The Sri Lankan team has now left Australia while Gunathilaka is still there for the investigation.
