The IPL 2025 Mega Auction is expected to bring changes, whether in the number of retentions or the RTM card rule. In August, the BCCI held a meeting with IPL franchise owners to gather their opinions. The meeting saw a disagreement among franchises over the retention rule. In the last mega auction, teams were allowed to retain only four players. This year, some franchises are pushing for more than five retentions, while others oppose the idea.

Ruyudu and Raina on IPL Retention Rule

The BCCI has yet to make a final decision on the retention rules. Meanwhile, former CSK batters Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu weighed in on the topic, both advocating for allowing as many retentions as possible. Rayudu expressed that franchises invest in developing players over several seasons, and releasing those groomed talents after every third season becomes a difficult decision.

“Personally, I feel retentions have to be a lot more because a franchise invests a lot in players. The core of the team is what makes every team unique in the IPL, so for me, the longer the core remains, the culture of the team remains. There is a greater chance of success. Retentions have to be there, and there need to be a lot of them. It can’t be just one or two. All the important players should be retained,” said Ambati Rayudu

Suresh Raina agreed with his former teammate, suggesting that the mega auction should continue to be held every three years. ‘I 100 percent agree with Rayudu. The mega auction should remain every three years. The IPL Governing Council will decide what’s best for the game,’ said Raina.

The league kicks off on September 20 in Jodhpur and will feature six teams, including star players like Shikhar Dhawan, Chris Gayle, Ross Taylor, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, and others.
