Sir Ravindra Jadeja is celebrating his 31st birthday today. This birthday is special for him as the all-rounder is having a great year with the bat. In 11 ODI innings this year Jadeja has scored 494 runs. 2019 has turned out to be a turning point of Jadeja’s career as after getting dropped from the limited-overs side in 2017, he has once again cemented his place in ODI and T20I sides.
This is why Ravindra Jadeja called as Sir
Jadeja is called as ‘Sir’ and there is a tale behind it. This thing started after India’s ouster from the 2010 T20 World Cup. Fans started criticising Jadeja using the term ‘Sir’ for his horrific performance against Australia in the tournament. Against Aussies, Jadeja had conceded 38 runs in just 2 overs and was a failure with the bat. India had lost all three matches in the Group E and was knocked out from the World T20.
Jadeja was dropped from the team however he made a comeback to the Indian team after scoring two triple hundreds in Ranji trophy. In 2012 IPL auction, Jadeja became the most expensive player as CSK bought him for $2 Million (INR 9.7 Crore at that time). During IPL 2013, sir troll came back again after MS Dhoni’s comment. This time these trolls were not criticising Jadeja but applauding his performances.
In CSK vs RCB in 2013, CSK needed 16 runs off the last over with Jadeja and Morris at the crease and Kohli handed the ball to RP Singh. CSK needed 2 runs of the final delivery and Jadeja on strike. RP bowled a short and wide delivery outside off and Jadeja hit it straight into the hands of Rampaul at 3rd man. Before Kohli could finish his celebrations, he realized that umpire has given it a no-ball as RP overstepped and the joy started in the CSK camp.
MS Dhoni rarely uses social media nowadays. But he used to post sarcastic tweets back in 2013. After the win against RCB Dhoni tweeted, “If you give Sir Jadeja 2 runs to score from 1 ball he will win it with the ball left”. Dhoni kept posting more ‘Sir Jadeja’ tweets. This was the moment when Jadeja officially gets the tag of ‘Sir’.
