Vitality Blast 2024: Hit-wicket, run-out on the same ball, yet Shan Masood survives

The Yorkshire vs Lancashire match on June 20 witnessed a rare incident. Pakistan cricketer Shan Masood knocked the stumps with his foot and then was run out at the non-striker’s end, but he was not given out. The incident in Vitality Blast 2024 occurred in the 15th over of Yorkshire’s innings. Masood tried to scoop the ball and made contact, but in the attempt, he stepped on the stumps and dislodged the bails

Shan Masood Given Not-Out Despite Hit-Wicket and Run-Out

Joe Root, who was unaware of the incident, ran for a single; however, Masood remained firm, thinking he was out. The umpire had immediately called a no-ball, and the fielder quickly threw the ball back to the bowler, who completed a run-out at the non-striker’s end. Meanwhile, Masood tried to reach the non-striker’s end however, he gave up after few steps.

As per the rules, a batter can’t be given out hit-wicket on a no-ball. However, three dismissals are allowed on a no-ball: run-out, hitting the ball twice, and obstructing the field. Therefore, the Lancashire players appealed for Shan Masood’s dismissal. However, the umpire surprisingly adjudged Masood not out.

The run-out was denied because the umpire believed that Masood thought he was out hit-wicket and was not attempting to take a run. According to Law 31.7 in the MCC rulebook, an umpire can intervene if they believe a batter has left their wicket under the misconception that they are out. In such cases, the umpire can call and signal a dead ball to stop play and allow the batter to return.

Shan Masood continued his innings and scored 61 runs off 41 balls. Yorkshire posted 173 runs, and in the chase, Lancashire fell 8 runs short of the target. Some netizens blamed Shan Masood’s not-out decision for Lancashire’s defeat, arguing that he should have been given run-out.
