The Irani Cup 2024 match is being played between defending Ranji champions Mumbai and the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Rest of India team. Mumbai, batting first, had a horrible start as their opener Prithvi Shaw made his way to the pavilion in just the 3rd over. It was Mukesh Kumar’s outswinger that deceived Shaw, and Devdutt Padikkal’s stunning effort at second slip completed the dismissal.

Prithvi Shaw tried to drive the ball through the cover region, but it took the outside edge. In a split second, Devdutt Padikkal reacted, making a full stretch and grabbing the ball out of thin air. Shaw was utterly disappointed as he scored only 4 runs in the first innings. He has been struggling for a while now. In his recent County stint with Northamptonshire, he managed to score just 71 runs in 6 outings.

Meanwhile, Mukesh Kumar delivered another blow to Mumbai in the same over, dismissing the newly-arrived Hardik Tamore for a duck. Now, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side was struggling at 6 runs with 2 wickets down. However, a 102-run partnership between Rahane and Shreyas Iyer put Mumbai in the driver’s seat. Iyer was dismissed after scoring 57, but at the time this article was posted, Rahane was still at the crease alongside Sarfaraz Khan.

The Irani Cup match is being played at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Ajinkya Rahane is leading Mumbai, while Ruturaj Gaikwad is tasked with making the Rest of India champions of the tournament for a record 31st time. On the other hand, if Mumbai wins, they will lift the Irani Cup for the 15th time, a record for any Ranji side.
