Saturday night’s ‘El Classico’ IPL clash between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings has well lived up to its roller-coaster reputation. Both the teams have been coming at each other strong in the first innings of the game; setting up what promises to be a very exciting latter-half for all fans watching.

But it wasn’t just the bat-vs-ball action that dominated all the limelight. The 10th over of Chennai’s batting innings saw a confusion of massive proportions when Surya Kumar Yadav attempted to run Faf du Plessis out.
The incident in question featured Faf swatting a ball off Jimmy Neesham’s bowling onto the mid-wicket side of the ground. It was a well-timed shot, with Faf and his partner Moeen Ali both looking to collect at least 2-runs of it.
However’s, Faf’s effort to get the second run was a bit lacking; which wasn’t ideal since Surya, fielding at mid-wicket had already collected the ball. The latter shot the ball in a rocket throw towards the strikers’ end where ‘keeper Quinton de Kock grabbed it quickly and dislodged off the bails. Faf, who looked well short of making his crease on time, was declared out on the stadium’s big screen.

But just as Faf was walking back to the pavilion, one of the on-field umpires stopped him. Third-umpire Chris Gaffney’s voice could be heard on the screen, saying “Stop, stop…I haven’t given out yet”. Apparently, it looked as if Quinton had dislodged the bails even before the ball reached him.

In fact, further replays proved that one of the bails had lit up even before de Kock had collected the ball. But the run-out call was still a close one, though; especially since it looked like Faf had just barely made his ground before the second bail was knocked off.

It was a close and dramatic call; even more so with the Mumbai player’s celebrating very early after seeing the on-screen replay and Faf’s getting a callback from the umpires. But ultimately, du Plessis survived by just a whisker of margin.
