Watch: Joe Root’s gesture for Daryl Mitchell after England’s triumph wins netizens’ hearts

Joe Root handed over a stump to the New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell as a souvenir post the last match for his outstanding batting performance.

Joe Root scored a brilliant knock of 86 off 125 balls in the third test match at Headingly in Leads on Monday. This resulted in England winning the match and also securing the series with a 3-0 win against New Zealand. Root missed his century with only 14 runs but eventually won praise from fans. Joe Root handed over a stump to the New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell as a souvenir. This incident was caught on camera and was a matter of praise for the fans.

Mitchell, who batted sixth, completely controlled this series by having scored 538 runs in six innings, including three centuries and two fifties. He and Tom Blundell saved the Kiwis from shame on numerous occasions, allowing them to avert an inning loss in this series. Regrettably, his efforts were in vain, as he was defeated in all three matches of the innings. Root, on the other hand, made sure to acknowledge his efforts and presented him with the match stump for a fantastic series. Daryl Mitchell was also designated New Zealand’s Player of the Series.

In the Test match, Jack Leach was named Man of the Match for his two five-wicket hauls, while Root was named Man of the Series for having scored 396 runs in six innings at an estimate of 99.00 and a remarkable strike rate of 74.15 thanks to the two centuries and a fifty. During the post-match press conference, Root stated that Jonny Bairstow surely deserves to be named Man of the Series based on his performances in the previous two matches. Bairstow did score 394 runs in six innings at an average of 78.80 and a strike rate of 120.12 in this series, and he managed to remain victorious on 71 runs off 44 balls in the final match to help England win 3-0.

England now has their next assignment as they are scheduled to play their rescheduled fifth test match against India which is supposed to start on 1st July in Birmingham. India currently is leading the series by 1-2 and the English side is looking confident as stated by the skipper Joe Root and is ready to face the Indian side. India is ranked 2nd in the ICC test teams roster and clearly was seen dominating the series back in August-September 2021.
