On the cricket field, you’ve seen batters play the switch hit, a skillful technique that allows a right-handed batter to become left-handed and vice versa, helping them counter different bowling variations. But have you ever seen a bowler pull off something similar? Probably not.
Kamindu Mendis Showcases Ambidextrous Skills on IPL Debut
Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis did exactly that on his IPL debut, leaving everyone stunned. Playing for SRH against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Kamindu made history as the first ambidextrous bowler in IPL history.
The 26-year-old all-rounder bowled left-handed to right-handed batters and right-handed to left-handers, creating a rare spectacle on the field. His unique skill not only left the audience in awe but also impressed the commentators. Pommie Mbangwa, who was on commentary, went on to say, “He bowled accurately with both arms. But it is confusing for a batter, isn’t it?”

Kamindu Mendis is playing his first IPL season. In the IPL 2025 auction, SRH acquired him at his base price of ₹75 lakh. Though he is not a specialist all-rounder, he primarily plays as a batter while contributing as a part-time bowler.
Mendis has had a remarkable start to his Test career. He made headlines by equaling the great Sir Don Bradman’s record of completing 1,000 Test runs in just 13 innings. However, his impact in limited-overs cricket has been relatively modest, and he is not known for an aggressive batting style.

On his IPL debut, Mendis played a steady knock of 27 runs off 20 balls and made an impact with the ball as well, picking up a wicket in his solitary over by dismissing Angkrish Raghuvanshi. However, the inclusion of the Sri Lankan batter couldn’t change SRH’s fortunes, as they succumbed to their third consecutive defeat of the season.
