The Ranji Trophy 2024-25 final between Vidarbha and Kerala is underway at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. The first day belonged to Vidarbha as they ended at 254/4. A crucial 215-run partnership between Karun Nair and Danish Malewar for the fourth wicket rescued Vidarbha after they had lost three early wickets.

No bowler could break their stand, but it eventually ended with an unfortunate run-out of Karun Nair. Frustrated Karun threw his bat on the ground after being dismissed. In the 82nd over of the innings, Kerala bowler Eden Apple delivered an extremely wide ball. The wicketkeeper dived and got his gloves to it, but the ball slipped past him.

Amid the chaos, a mix-up occurred between the batters. Karun Nair took off for a run, but non-striker Danish Malewar denied it. Meanwhile, Rohan Kunnummal, positioned in the slips, quickly collected the ball and fired a throw at the striker’s end, directly hitting the stumps. Karun, caught well short of his crease while trying to return and was run out. In frustration, he threw his bat onto the ground.

Karun Nair was dismissed for 86, missing out on a century in the Ranji Trophy final. On the other hand, Danish Malewar remains unbeaten on 138 and will resume Vidarbha’s innings on the second day alongside nightwatchman Yash Thakur.

The 2024-25 season has been outstanding for Karun Nair. He finished as the highest run-scorer in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, amassing a remarkable 779 runs in just 8 innings at an astonishing average of 389. His dominance extended to the Ranji Trophy as well, where he scored 728 runs in 15 innings, making him the tournament’s fifth-highest run-getter.

With an outstanding domestic season, Test triple-centurion Karun Nair has strengthened his case for an India recall. After the IPL, India will tour England for a Test series, and it remains to be seen whether Karun can earn the selectors’ trust. Meanwhile, he is part of the Delhi Capitals squad for IPL 2025. If given an opportunity, it will be a crucial chance for him to perform well and further bolster his claim for a spot in the national team.
