Cricket is not always about runs, wickets, or records. Sometimes, a small moment says more about a team than anything that happens on the field, and that is exactly what happened during the BCCI Naman Awards 2026. While everyone at the awards ceremony congratulated India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad, one simple moment between KL Rahul and Sanju Samson quietly stole the spotlight.

It was not planned. It was not dramatic. But it felt real. And that is why people connected with it instantly.

Pure respect! KL Rahul embraces Sanju Samson during emotional T20 World Cup tribute

As the T20 World Cup-winning team walked towards the stage to receive their awards, everything looked routine. Players lined up, names were called, and the ceremony moved forward. Then came the moment.

KL Rahul called out to Sanju Samson. At first, Samson did not even realize who was calling him. But the moment he turned, he saw Rahul and immediately walked towards him. What followed was a long, warm hug. No cameras were needed to force emotion here. It just happened naturally.

That one gesture quickly went viral because it showed something fans often talk about but rarely see clearly- genuine respect between players.

Not everything in cricket is a rivalry. Yes, we all know that modern cricket often gets framed as a competition amongst the players. Fans compare performances, argue over selections, and create narratives around who deserves a place in the team.

But moments like this break that idea in the first place. KL Rahul and Sanju Samson have both fought for similar roles in the Indian team over the years. They have faced selection pressure, form issues, and constant comparisons.

Yet, when the moment came, there was no ego. Just a simple gesture that said, “Well done.” Because it reminds everyone that inside the dressing room, things are very different from what people assume outside.

Sanju Samson’s journey makes the moment special

This moment feels even more meaningful when you look at Sanju Samson’s journey. For years, he stayed on the edge of the Indian team. He showed talent but did not always get consistent chances. There were questions about his place, his role and his future. Then came the T20 World Cup 2026.

Samson delivered when it mattered the most for the team and drew plaudits from every nook and corner of the cricket fraternity. The right-hander scored 321 runs in just five innings, played match-winning knocks and ended the tournament as one of India’s biggest heroes.

Even he admitted that the feeling still feels unreal. “When I get up in the morning, I’m like, ‘has it really happened?’” He was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for his consistent performances.

“It feels like a dream, actually (smiles). Very, very happy, very grateful. Out of words, out of emotions. I’m just going through it, so it feels a bit surreal. When asked about his three consecutive match-winning knocks, he said, “To be very honest, I think, sir, I think this started one to two years before.”

“When I was with the 2024 World Cup-winning team in the West Indies, I couldn’t play a game. I kept on visualizing. I kept on dreaming. I kept on working. This is exactly what I wanted to do then. I thought I need to work in, I need to put in so much of work that this is exactly what I wanted to achieve. And by God’s grace, I think today things have turned around. I think right after the New Zealand series, I was broke [broken]. I was completely out of my mind. I was like, okay, my dreams have shattered. Okay, what else can I do? But God had different plans. I think I suddenly came back into the crucial games and I did what I could for my country. So, I think I’m very proud and very happy that I was courageous enough to dream about it. And actually, things have turned up so nicely for me. So, very grateful,” Samson added.
