India A is currently on a two-match unofficial tour of Australia. Under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, the team lost the first match in Mackay and is now playing the second unofficial Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Unfortunately, their struggles have continued.
In their first innings, India A was bowled out for a modest 161, while Australia A posted 223 in response, putting the visitors on the back foot. With a deficit to overcome, India needed a strong response in their second innings. However, they stumbled early, losing three quick wickets and finding themselves at 44/3.
KL Rahul’s disastrous leave against Australia A
Opener KL Rahul was at the crease alongside Devdutt Padikkal. Meanwhile, a critical error by Rahul worsened the team’s position. In the 18th over, facing offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli, Rahul misjudged a delivery that pitched on the middle stump. Expecting the ball to drift down the leg side, Rahul let it go, but the ball held its line, barely spinning. It struck his pad before deflecting onto the stumps, resulting in a costly dismissal.

KL Rahul’s dismissal left India reeling at 44/4, still trailing in the match. By the time of this article, Devdutt Padikkal had also departed, pushing India into deeper trouble at 56/5. This series was a valuable opportunity for Border-Gavaskar Trophy-bound players to acclimate to Australian conditions. Key players such as KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Prasidh Krishna are part of this tour, aiming to gain crucial experience ahead of their five-match Test series against Australia’s senior team in two weeks.

KL Rahul was dropped from India’s playing XI in their last Test match, and his performance in this unofficial Test series has not helped his cause. Across both innings of this match, he managed to score just 14 runs, failing to make an impact. Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan is being favored over him in the India playing XI, and it seems likely that Rahul may find himself warming the bench during the opening match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
