The Windies bowlers made a statement on the opening day of the Test; however, they were faced by resilience from Bairstow. Earlier on Day 1, Joe Root opted to bat after winning the toss. The English batsmen were faced with brilliant and disciplined bowling by the Windies bowlers which kept them in check. At one point, England had lost their 4 top-order batsmen at the score of just 48. Johnny Bairstow came to their rescue and stayed on the crease till the end of the inning.

The batsman scored 140 runs for his team and was the last batsman to get out, taking his team to a very competitive total of 311 in the first inning. West Indies got a good start as their openers notched up a 83-run partnership, however they faltered and lost 4 quick wickets. The Windies have scored 202 runs at the loss of 4 wickets and trail England by 109 runs.
