Former Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni made the headlines after he denied a single to Daryl Mitchell during the last over against Punjab Kings in the 49th match of IPL 2024 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. It was an incident that became a major talking point on social media, with the majority of the netizens, criticizing Dhoni for turning down the 14-crore batter after the latter reached the striker’s end.

PBKS’ bowlers chipped in with disciplinary bowling performances from the get-go and contained runs. They made things quite tougher for the CSK batters throughout the game. However, in the fag end of the overs, CSK managed to find a way to score runs at a rapid pace, which helped them post a decent total on the board. MS Dhoni who came out to bat at No.7 also faced tremendous pressure at the beginning.

During the third ball of the 20th over, Arshdeep Singh bowled a low full-toss delivery to MS Dhoni and to which the latter got a toe edge off his willow. MS Dhoni didn’t good connection with the ball as he hit it towards the deep cover. Meanwhile, Daryl Mitchell quickly sprinted towards the striker’s end in the hope of getting back on strike. Much to everyone’s surprise, MS Dhoni sent the batsman back, which took everyone by surprise.

Soon after that, netizens took to their respective social media handles and launched a scathing attack on MS Dhoni as they felt that the latter’s act towards Mitchell was rather disrespectful. One user wrote, “Selfish”. The other user wrote, “Thinking he is better than the game”. The third user wrote, “Ambati Rayudu can relate” whereas the fourth user wrote, “I think it’s definitely wrong as a Dhoni fan.”

Talking about the game, CSK posted 162/7 in their quota of 20 overs. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad top-scored with 62 off 48 balls including 5 fours and 2 sixes to become the leading run-getter this season. On the other hand, PBKS chased down the target in 17.5 overs and won the game by 7 wickets. Harpreet Brar who registered 2/17 in four overs was named the Man of the Match.
