Watch: Sunil Narine becomes first player to get a Red Card in CPL 2023

Sunil Narine made the headlines after he became the first player to get a ‘red card’ in the ongoing edition of the Caribbean Premier League. The Trinbago Knight Riders all-rounder was sent off just before the start of the 20th over, which forced skipper Kieron Pollard to change field placements accordingly. When a player receives a red card, he is supposed to leave the field and the team will have one less player during the passage of the play.

Moreover, things get a little more complicated in field placements, since only two players will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle, giving a headache to the team. Over the years, there has been quite a lot of time wasting that constantly occurred in the CPL. As a result, the Caribbean Premier League decided to introduce a new ‘red card’ rule in order to keep a check on poor over-rates.

Sunil Narine gets the first-ever red card in CPL history

The TKR franchise was lagging in terms of their over-rate by the start of the 20th over against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. The on-field umpire who had been monitoring the activity showed the red card to Kieron Pollard and Co. This is the reason why, Narine had to leave the turf for the last over of the innings.  had to leave the field for the final over. Trinabago Knight Riders were at a slight disadvantage since they played with 10 players.

Batting first, St Kitts and Patriots posted 178/5 in 20 overs. In reply, TBK chased down the target in 17.1 overs and won the game by six wickets. TBK’s Sunil Narine was the pick of the bowlers as he registered 3/24 in 4 overs. Nicholas Pooran was named the Player of the Match for his match-winning 61 off 32 balls.

New rules in CPL 2023

1. If the team is falling behind the ‘required over rate’ at the start of the 18th over, then an extra player must enter the fielding circle, which will have five players inside the circle.

2. In case the team is behind the rate at the start of the 19th over, then two fielders must come into the fielding circle, which will have a total of six players inside the circle.

3. What if the team is behind the rate at the start of the 20th over? In this case, the teams will lose a player from the field, selected by the skipper and have six players inside the fielding circle (This will give the batting team extra freedom and cushion to play shots).

4. What if the batting team wastes time? If that’s the case, they will receive the first and final warning from the on-field umpires, before the batting team will be penalized with a five-run penalty for each instance of time wasting.
