BBL 2022-23 Melbourne darby saw a controversy erupt as Melbourne Stars skipper Adam Zampa tried to run-out Tom Rogers at the non-striker’s end through a Mankad.
The incident happened during the last over of the Renegades’ innings bowled by Zampa. Rogers has left the popping crease before the ball was released and the leggie was swift to run him out.
Though Zampa pulled off the clever move with the non-striker 10 kilometers outside the crease, he was still denied the dismissal due to a bizarre clause.
Notably, Marylebone Cricket Council (MCC) deems a Mankad legal if and only if the bowler hasn’t completed their bowling action before it; and since Adam Zampa had gone through his bowling action before his maneuver, Melbourne Stars did not get a wicket for it.
The on-field umpire referred the decision to Third Umpire Shawn Craig, who declared the Mankad improper as Zampa’s bowling arm had ‘gone past the vertical’ before he attempted the Mankad.

Tom Rogers gives it back to Adam Zampa and his men
Renegades pacer Tom Rogers –who had expressed displeasure over Zampa’s Mankad attempt earlier– seemed to be spurred on by the incident.
The right-armer ran amok the Melbourne Stars’ batting lineup in a fire-breathing spell.
Rogers first undid Stars’ top 3 with lateral movement early in the innings before adding two more to his kitty; hitting the wicket hard with the old ball.
Tom Rogers finished the match with career-best T20 figures of 5 for 16, limiting Adam Zampa and his men to just 108 runs.

The 33-run win over Stars takes Melbourne Renegades two spots up to number 3 in BBL 2022-23 standings, placing them well in the race for playoffs. Zampa’s side, on the other hand, sits second last and is almost knocked out of the tournament.
