The UAE under-19 cricket team’s captain, Aryan Lakra, became the center of a major comical-moment in a match today. Batting against the Canada U-19 team, Lakra ran himself out in an unbelievably hilarious fashion in the teams’ 13-place playoffs showdown at Potchefstroom’s Witrand Cricket Field.
The incident occurred early, right during the second over of the match. Canada seamer Muhammad Kamal started the over with a length delivery. On-strike Lakra guided the delivery to the point region, and began to advance for a quick-run. His opening-partner Vriitya Aravind instantly collaborated, dashing quick to the opposite crease. However, mid-way on-course, Lakra hesitated, and ordered Aravind to run back to the non-strikers end. It was late now, however, for Aravind to comply to his captain’s commands; as the Canadian fielders were already aiming for the stumps. With both the batsmen at the strikers’ end of the pitch, Canada were gifted an easy wicket.
More comedy follows
Further comedy ensued; this time from the Canadian players. First, the fielder at point aimed for the strikers stumps, only to miss his aim. The ball glided to the fielder on the leg-side, who aimed for the stumps at the vacant non-strikers’ end. And once again, the bowler was unable to collect the throw, nearly handing the United Arab Emirates’ batsmen yet another reprieve! Ultimately, the mid-off fielder tossed the ball to their captain Ashton Deosammy, who comfortably dislodged the non-striker’s end’s bails. Technically, Aravind had made his way to his allotted crease, meaning that it was Lakra who had to walk back to the dressing room. Canada players, meanwhile, ecstatically celebrated their hard yet-easily earned wicket.
