Team India have found themselves in a spot of bother on the second day of the second test for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as they have lost wickets in quick succession. Star batter Virat Kohli, who was anchoring the Indian innings got out in a controversial manner after which he lashed out at the 3rd Umpire.
Virat Kohli’s LBW decision creates major controversy
Team India’s former skipper Virat Kohli looked in complete control on the second day of second test against Australia as he was batting at a score of 44 and was tackling the Australian spin trio really well. However, in the 50th over of Indian innings, Virat was given out LBW by the on-field umpire.
Australian left arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who is making his test debut in this game bowld an arm delivery to Virat who tried defending it. The ball got sandwiched between his pads and bat as the Australian fielders made a loud appeal after which on-field umpire Nitin Menon raised his finger and adjudged him LBW out.
Virat straightaway signalled for DRS as he believed it was sliding down leg and might have made connection with his bat as well. During the review, UltraEdge showed a spike when the ball was exactly in between the bat and pad and there was no conclusive evidence of ball hitting Virat’s pad first.
Despite any conclusive evidence, the third umpire went on to look for ball tracking where it signalled ‘Umpire’s Call’ as the ball marginally hit the leg stump and the on-field umpire stayed with his original decision. Kohli was clearly furious with the decision as he took the long walk back to the pavilion.
Virat Kohli, along with head coach Rahul Dravid and other coaching staff in the dressing room, had another look at the dismissal after which he lashed out at third umpire’s decision.

According to ICC’s umpiring rules, in assessing point 36.1.3, if the ball makes contact with the striker’s person and bat simultaneously, this shall be considered as the ball having first touched the bat.

The Indian team found themselves in a deep trouble after the dismissal of Virat Kohli as they were once placed at a score of 139-7 as no other batter apart from Virat could settle himself on the tricky Delhi wicket. Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel then came to rescue the Indian team as they formed a formidable 9th wicket partnership.
