The upcoming edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 tournament is slated to be held in the Caribbean islands and the United States of America from June 1 to June 29. Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had to make some bold calls while picking the final 15-member squad for the main event.
Due to stiff competition, some recognized players didn’t fall in the selectors’ radar and were unlucky to have missed out in India’s squad for the marquee event. Let’s now take a look at the four big players who failed to make the cut in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad.
1. KL Rahul
KL Rahul’s absence in the Indian squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup is one thing that the cricket fraternity could not fathom out. He has been one of the best T20 batsmen for India in recent years. The classy right-hander has played 72 T20Is for India, scoring 2265 runs at a strike rate of 139.1 and an average of 37.8, laced with two centuries and 22 half-centuries. The selectors went ahead with Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson as the preferred wicketkeeper-batsmen for the tournament.
2. Ishan Kishan
Young Indian talent Ishan Kishan burst onto the scene with his aggressive stroke play combined with his ability to score runs at a rate of knots and mount pressure on the opposition from the get-go. The competent wicketkeeper-batter failed to make the cut in Team India’s squad for the T20 World Cup. He scored 2568 runs in the IPL for Mumbai Indians, laced with 16 fifties at a strike rate of 135.5. On the other hand, he 796 runs for Team India in 32 appearances including six fifties to his credit.
3. Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer is another talented batsman who missed out on making the cut in India’s squad for T20 World Cup. He is known for his sound batting technique, which is not that common in the typical T20 format. While he has showcased his mettle to play both spin and pace well, he hasn’t quite been able to tackle the short-pitched deliveries consistently. The opposition teams have often exposed his frailties as well.
4. Rinku Singh
Rinku Singh hogged the limelight in the Indian cricket fraternity when he pulled off unthinkable by smacking five consecutive sixes off Yash Dayal’s bowling to guide KKR to a miraculous win over Gujarat Titans. Since then, he has become a fan favourite to many. Notably, he also played 15 T20Is for India, scoring 356 runs at an average of 89 including two fifties and a strike rate of 176.2. Unfortunately, a bright prospect like him didn’t make it to the squad but has been named in the reserves.
