The Indian Women team is currently locking horns with the Australian Women in the only Test of the tour in Queensland. The rain played spoilsport on the first two days washing most of the play, however, the third day brought some good news for the fans. The Indian team was put in to bat first after the Australian skipper won the toss. The Indian inning witnessed a great example set by Punam Raut for the others to follow.
The Indian women started the inning steadily as both Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma played cautiously, just falling short of a century partnership by 7 runs. Punam Raut walked in at No. 3 after the departure of Shafali Verma. The right-handed batter took her time and took 165 deliveries to score 36 runs. However, it was the way she got out that is bringing her all the praise and appreciation.
Punam Raut’s selfless gesture in ongoing Women’s Test
The moment came in the 81st over of the Indian inning when Punam Raut was facing the left-arm orthodox bowler Sophie Molineux. The bowler tossed the ball up as Raut stretched to block the delivery, however it brushed the bat slightly. The Australians went up in a half-hearted appeal and the umpire shook his head, but Raut knew that she had nicked the ball and started walking back to the pavilion.
The gesture was applauded by the India team as Punam Raut reached the dugout. This was surely a great example of sportswomanship by the right-handed Indian batter. She is earning respect and appreciation from all quarters for her selfless gesture on the field. It is noteworthy that there is no DRS in this multi-format series so Raut had all the chance to stay on the crease, but she decided against it.
