The debate over Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli has always attracted strong opinions. Both batters enjoyed outstanding Test careers and produced some memorable performances outside India.
AB de Villiers recently rated Kohli higher than Tendulkar as an overseas Test batter. De Villiers played against both players and knows what it takes to succeed in different conditions. However, a closer look at their numbers tells a different story.
When we compare their records in the seven countries where both played Test cricket outside India, Tendulkar comes out ahead in most categories. He has a better batting average in six of those seven countries and has scored more runs in six. He also has more centuries in five of them.
Kohli’s biggest advantage comes in South Africa, where he has a better average than Tendulkar.
Sachin Tendulkar Has the Better Overall Record
Tendulkar spent 24 years playing Test cricket and faced some of the best bowling attacks of his generation. He also played in different conditions across Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, the West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
Kohli also built an excellent overseas record, particularly during the best years of his career. However, Tendulkar’s numbers remain stronger when we compare the two batters country by country.
| Country | Tendulkar Avg | Tendulkar Runs | Tendulkar 100s | Kohli Avg | Kohli Runs | Kohli 100s |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Australia | 53.20 | 1,809 | 6 | 46.72 | 1,542 | 7 |
| England | 54.31 | 1,575 | 4 | 33.65 | 976 | 2 |
| South Africa | 46.44 | 1,161 | 5 | 49.50 | 891 | 2 |
| New Zealand | 49.52 | 842 | 2 | 36.00 | 252 | 1 |
| West Indies | 47.69 | 620 | 1 | 44.00 | 660 | 2 |
| Sri Lanka | 67.94 | 1,155 | 5 | 43.77 | 394 | 2 |
| Bangladesh | 136.66 | 820 | 5 | 14.75 | 59 | 0 |
The numbers give Tendulkar a clear advantage across most countries. Kohli has a better average in South Africa and has scored more runs in the West Indies. He also has more centuries in Australia and the West Indies.
Outside those areas, Tendulkar’s record remains stronger.
Australia Produced Big Performances From Both Batting Greats
Australia became one of the biggest stages of Tendulkar’s career. He scored 1,809 runs at an average of 53.20, along with six centuries.
His performances against Australia’s pace attacks helped establish his reputation as a batter who could handle tough overseas conditions. Tendulkar regularly faced high-quality bowling during an era when Australia had several world-class options.
Kohli also enjoyed considerable success in Australia. He scored 1,542 runs at 46.72, with seven centuries.
Kohli therefore has one more century in Australia, but Tendulkar has more runs and a better average. On the overall numbers, Tendulkar gets the edge.

England Highlights the Difference
England is another country where Tendulkar has a sizeable advantage.
Tendulkar scored 1,575 runs at 54.31, including four centuries. Kohli managed 976 runs at 33.65, with two centuries.
Kohli’s 2018 tour remains an important part of his Test career. After struggling badly during India’s previous visit in 2014, he returned four years later and scored heavily against England.
That series showed how much Kohli had developed as a Test batter. Even so, Tendulkar’s overall record in England remains considerably better.
His ability to score consistently against movement and in challenging English conditions helped him build one of the strongest overseas records of his generation.
South Africa Is Kohli’s Strongest Case
South Africa is the one country where Kohli clearly leads Tendulkar on batting average.
Kohli averages 49.50 in South Africa, compared with Tendulkar’s 46.44. Kohli has scored 891 runs in nine Tests, while Tendulkar collected 1,161 runs in 15 matches.
Kohli produced several important innings in South Africa and generally looked comfortable against the pace and bounce.
This record gives Kohli a strong argument in the debate. If the discussion focuses specifically on South Africa, Kohli has the better numbers.
However, South Africa remains the only one of the seven countries where Kohli has a higher average.
Tendulkar Dominated in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka provides perhaps the clearest example of Tendulkar’s superiority in the comparison.
The former India batter averaged 67.94 in the country and scored 1,155 runs with five centuries.
Kohli, meanwhile, scored 394 runs at an average of 43.77, with two centuries.
Tendulkar also enjoyed a strong record in New Zealand. He scored 842 runs at 49.52, while Kohli managed 252 runs at 36.00.
The numbers show how effectively Tendulkar adapted to different conditions during his long career.
Kohli’s Overseas Test Legacy Remains Strong
The comparison should not take anything away from Kohli.
He enjoyed one of the strongest periods of Test batting in Indian cricket. His peak years produced runs across different conditions, while his performances as captain helped India become a much more competitive team overseas.
Kohli also played an important role in developing India’s fast-bowling strength. His teams regularly competed in conditions that had traditionally challenged Indian sides.
| Achievement | Virat Kohli |
|---|---|
| Countries compared outside India | 7 |
| Countries with higher average than Tendulkar | 1 |
| Best average | 49.50 in South Africa |
| Australia runs | 1,542 |
| Australia centuries | 7 |
| England runs | 976 |
| England centuries | 2 |
His overseas record therefore deserves plenty of respect. Kohli also achieved several things in Test cricket that Tendulkar did not, particularly as captain.
Sachin Tendulkar Wins the Overall Comparison
Kohli’s career contains several achievements that never appeared on Tendulkar’s resume. His success as India’s Test captain, his performances in Australia and his influence on India’s approach to overseas cricket all form an important part of his legacy.
But the question here is specifically about overseas Test batting.
On that front, Tendulkar’s numbers give him the advantage.
Across the seven countries where both players played Tests outside India, Tendulkar has the better batting average in six countries. He has also scored more runs in six, while he leads the century count in five.
| Category | Tendulkar | Kohli |
|---|---|---|
| Countries with higher batting average | 6 | 1 |
| Countries with more runs | 6 | 1 |
| Countries with more centuries | 5 | 2 |
Kohli remains one of India’s greatest Test batters and built an impressive overseas record of his own. His performances helped India compete more strongly away from home and created plenty of memorable moments.
However, when the comparison covers all seven countries, Tendulkar’s consistency gives him the stronger case.
