Over the past few weeks, MS Dhoni’s possible comeback has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding Chennai Super Kings. Visuals of him training have repeatedly surfaced online, and broadcasters have shown him preparing during practice sessions as well. Naturally, fans assumed that a return was close.
Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin dropped a cryptic post on MS Dhoni’s future in the IPL on his official X account today. And as expected, whenever the discussion revolves around MS Dhoni, the internet rarely stays calm for long.
Ravi Ashwin drops a cryptic post on MS Dhoni’s future
Ravi Ashwin’s post on X (formerly Twitter) was short but open to interpretation. He wrote, “Not happening today! In 2027? Maybe. Don’t think any batting changes will happen. Akeal Hosein in?”
That was enough to send social media into overdrive. Many fans immediately connected the post to Dhoni’s much-discussed return this season. Some interpreted it as a hint that the CSK legend may once again miss the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, which also happens to be Chennai’s final home game of the league stage. Others wondered whether Ashwin was indirectly suggesting that Dhoni’s IPL future itself remains uncertain.

The biggest reason for the reaction is simple because nobody really knows what Dhoni’s plans are anymore. Every season now feels like it could be his last. Every home game in Chennai carries an emotional atmosphere because fans are aware that opportunities to watch him in yellow are becoming fewer.
But the reality has been different. Dhoni has still not returned to playing action this season despite multiple training appearances. Reports around the team suggest that his lingering calf strain has been the major concern. He reportedly recovered to an extent, but the injury flared up again just when he was building toward a possible comeback.
At this stage of his career, even minor fitness setbacks become difficult to manage. Dhoni is no longer the player who can simply walk into high-intensity cricket after weeks away. The workload management around him has clearly become more cautious.
There is also another important factor that many fans are discussing, which is Chennai’s recent resurgence. CSK looked down and out at one stage of the tournament, but they slowly rebuilt momentum and kept themselves alive in the playoff race.
The team combination has started working again, and that may have influenced the management’s thinking. Bringing Dhoni back immediately, especially if he is not fully fit, could disturb the balance of a side that has finally found rhythm.
That is why many supporters actually agreed with Ashwin’s line about “no batting changes.” Some fans believe emotions should not override team decisions right now. If CSK genuinely feel that someone like Akeal Hosein offers better tactical balance, especially against Hyderabad’s batting lineup, then the team management may choose practicality over sentiment.
Still, the emotional side of the Dhoni discussion can never truly be ignored. For Chennai supporters, Dhoni is not just another player nearing retirement. He is the face of the franchise, the leader who built CSK’s identity, and the reason millions became emotionally attached to the team in the first place. Every uncertain update naturally creates panic because fans know the end is approaching, even if nobody officially says it.
CSK still have a narrow path to the playoffs. They can finish with a maximum of 16 points if they win their remaining two matches. However, qualification also depends heavily on other results, with Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals needing to slip up as well.
Chennai will first face Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk before ending their league campaign against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on May 21.
