The five-time champions may already be out of the playoff race, but their thrilling chase against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala showed they still have pride, firepower, and plenty of entertainment left in them. At the centre of the post-match buzz was none other than Rohit Sharma, who once again proved why fans love his personality just as much as his batting.
Mumbai Indians chased down a massive 201-run target against Punjab Kings at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium. While the team produced a superb batting performance overall, Rohit’s own innings was unusually slow by modern T20 standards. The former MI captain scored 25 runs from 26 balls, something fans rarely associate with a naturally aggressive batter like him.

But instead of avoiding the topic, Rohit decided to laugh at himself. A video from the Mumbai Indians dressing room quickly went viral on social media after the match. Rohit was addressing the players and support staff while appreciating the team effort. In classic Rohit Sharma style, he slipped in a hilarious one-liner about his own innings.
“Guys, great win, it was a complete team effort with the bat. It was good to see everyone chip in while I was enjoying my bit of Test cricket,” Rohit Sharma added.
The entire dressing room burst into laughter immediately. The comment perfectly captured Rohit’s relaxed personality and his ability to keep the mood light even after a rare off-day with the bat.
That self-awareness is one reason why Rohit remains such a respected figure in Indian cricket. Many players become defensive after criticism or poor performances. Rohit instead turned his slow innings into a joke before anyone else could. Fans online also appreciated the honesty and humor behind the remark.

Rohit struggled to find timing consistently. On the other hand, Ryan Rickelton ensured Mumbai Indians got the start they needed. Rickelton smashed 48 runs off just 23 deliveries. He kept the required run rate under control early in the chase.
The opening partnership added 61 runs in just 39 balls. This laid a strong platform for the middle order to attack later in the innings. Rohit himself acknowledged how important Rickelton’s innings was for the chase.
He praised the South African batter during the dressing room speech and admitted that the pitch was not as easy as the final scorecard might suggest. According to Rohit, Rickelton’s fearless approach gave Mumbai the momentum they needed to push forward.

After the solid start, Tilak Varma completely took control of the chase. The young left-hander played one of his finest IPL knocks under pressure. Tilak remained unbeaten on 75 off just 33 balls and shifted gears beautifully during the middle overs.
Whenever Punjab Kings looked like creating pressure, Tilak responded with clean hitting and smart placement. He never allowed the asking rate to get out of hand.
Will Jacks also played an important cameo at the end. He smashed an unbeaten 25 off only 10 deliveries. Together, Tilak and Jacks finished the chase with one ball remaining and completed a memorable win for the Mumbai Indians.
Punjab Kings suffered their fifth straight loss of the season. It left their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. They now need at least one win from their remaining two matches to stay alive in the tournament.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians will play their next match against the Kolkata Knight Riders on May 20, Wednesday at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. They will end their campaign on May 24 against the Rajasthan Royals at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
