Indian cricket barely gets time to celebrate one series before the next challenge arrives. Just days after wrapping up a successful home ODI series and lifting the Tri-Nation A title in Sri Lanka, the Men in Blue are back on the road. India will play a two-match T20I series against Ireland starting on June 26 in Belfast.
The series marks the beginning of Shreyas Iyer’s journey as India’s new T20I captain. On the other hand, several young players will look to strengthen their place in the squad. There is also the possibility of history being created as the 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is in line to become the youngest male cricketer to represent India in international cricket.
With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, every game is another chance for players to prove they belong.
All eyes on Shreyas Iyer’s first series as captain
The biggest talking point ahead of the tour is Shreyas Iyer taking charge of India’s T20I side. After replacing Suryakumar Yadav as captain, Iyer now has the opportunity to lead a talented group of players in his first assignment.
Iyer has led teams successfully in domestic cricket and franchise cricket, and now comes the biggest challenge of all—leading India.
Ireland may not carry the same reputation as some of the bigger cricketing nations, but India will know they cannot afford to take the hosts lightly. A strong start under a new captain would give the team plenty of confidence going into future assignments.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stands on the verge of history
Another name that everyone will be talking about is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
At just 15 years old, the young batter has already created plenty of excitement with his fearless approach. If he gets a place in the playing XI, he will become the youngest male player to make his international debut for India, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record.
It is the kind of moment every young cricketer dreams of. The pressure will be enormous, but so will the opportunity. Even if he gets only one game, all eyes will be on how the teenager handles the biggest stage of his career so far.
India have plenty of depth in the squad
India have travelled with a squad that mixes established names with exciting youngsters.
The batting unit looks strong with Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma capable of taking the game away from any opposition. Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar provide balance by contributing with both bat and ball.
The bowling attack also has enough variety. Arshdeep Singh brings experience with the new ball and at the death, while Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna and Prince Yadav add pace. Spin duties are expected to be handled by Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi, two bowlers who have regularly troubled batters in the shortest format.
The tour also gives the team management a chance to test different combinations before tougher assignments later in the season.
Belfast unrest briefly cast doubt over the series
The build-up to the series was not completely smooth.
Reports of unrest and violence in parts of Belfast over the past two weeks had raised concerns about whether the matches would go ahead as scheduled. Naturally, player safety became the biggest priority.
Cricket Ireland, however, has remained in regular contact with the relevant authorities and confirmed that it continues to monitor the situation closely. The board has made it clear that the safety of players, officials, and supporters remains its top priority.
As of now, both matches are set to be played at the Stormont Cricket Ground in Belfast.
