'We Don't Want Him': Iceland Cricket Mocks Gautam Gambhir After India's 0-2 T20I Series Defeat Against Ireland

The Men in Blue arrived in Ireland as overwhelming favourites, but they failed to win either of the two matches. Ireland produced disciplined performances in both games to complete a memorable 2-0 series whitewash over Shreyas Iyer’s side.

India’s shock T20I series defeat to Ireland has triggered widespread criticism. Head coach Gautam Gambhir finds himself at the centre of the debate.

The defeats have raised several questions about India’s approach, team selection, and batting combination. Many fans and former cricketers have also questioned the decision to hand the captaincy to Shreyas Iyer ahead of Suryakumar Yadav, while others have turned their attention to Gambhir’s tactics and squad composition.

The criticism did not remain limited to Indian cricket circles. Iceland Cricket, famous for its witty and sarcastic social media posts, joined the conversation with a cheeky dig at the India head coach after the series ended.

Iceland Cricket Takes Hilarious Swipe at Gautam Gambhir After India’s 0-2 Disaster against Ireland

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Iceland Cricket account posted a message that quickly went viral among cricket fans.

“We can confirm that we do not wish to add Gautam Gambhir to our coaching staff. He clearly has talent, though. To take those Indian players and deliver those results in Ireland takes truly remarkable gifts,” Iceland Cricket wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The post attracted thousands of reactions within a short time. While many fans enjoyed the humour, others defended Gambhir and pointed out that one poor series should not define a coach’s tenure.

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar, meanwhile, offered a more technical assessment of India’s struggles.

According to Manjrekar, India have gone too far in packing the side with all-rounders. He believes the team now lacks a specialist middle-order batter capable of handling difficult conditions when the ball is moving around.

His post read: “It was too little earlier… under Gambhir, it is too many. The ‘all-rounders’. India need a PURE middle-order batter, pronto!”

Manjrekar expanded on his views during the broadcaster’s post-match discussion. He argued that many Indian batters have become accustomed to batting on flat surfaces, making it difficult for them to adapt when they travel overseas. In Ireland, the pitches offered movement for both seamers and swing bowlers, exposing India’s lack of adaptability.

He also suggested that Shubman Gill should gradually return to India’s T20I setup because of his ability to perform in overseas conditions.

“Shubman Gill… just for people to understand, this is a guy who is a T20 batter now and had a tremendous IPL as well. I’m not talking about captaincy, but these are the players you slowly want to introduce back into T20 cricket because they have a little more depth in conditions like these, and are used to them as well, like we saw when he played in England and overseas. So, that is the path for Shubman Gill going forward; it won’t be right now, but it will start to happen slowly,” Manjrekar said during the discussion.

His comments echoed concerns raised by several experts after India’s batting struggled throughout the series. The top order failed to build partnerships, while the middle order looked uncomfortable against disciplined bowling. India also struggled to rotate the strike consistently. They failed to adapt their batting plans according to the conditions.

Meanwhile, the attention turns to the upcoming five-match T20I series against England. The T20I opener will kick off on July 1.

For Gambhir, the pressure will remain high. Every selection decision and tactical move is now likely to come under greater scrutiny. At the same time, the England series offers India the perfect chance to silence the critics and regain momentum ahead of a busy international season.
