India registered a convincing win over New Zealand at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday in the final Twenty20 international game. With this, they thrashed the Kiwis in the shortest format with beautiful all-round abilities from all the three departments. However, during the final game, India all-rounder Shivam Dube’s bowling made an infamous record where England pacer Stuart Broad gave a befitting reply.
India won the toss and elected to bat first. Regular captain Virat Kohli didn’t play and Rohit Sharma led the pack. He didn’t open as Sanju Samson opened the knock with KL Rahul. Samson failed to do well but Rahul and Rohit did pretty well as they added 88 runs before Rahul’s dismissal. Rohit smashed 60 before retired hurt.
Later, Shreyas Iyer scored 33 and a quickfire 11 off 4 from Manish Pandey took India to 163 in their allotted 20 overs. While bowling, they dismissed Colin Munro and Martin Guptill very cheaply. However, experienced Ross Taylor and Tim Seifert started to steady the ship. Amidst all these, Shivam Dube did an unthinkable job.
Ross Taylor and Tim Seifert joined hands to punish the bowler with a whopping 34 runs in Dube’s over that became the second-highest runs conceded by a bowler in a single over in T20 internationals. It happened in the tenth over of the Kiwi’s innings when they needed to score big to let the pressure off and chase down the total with ease. With this, the batsmen started opening their arms, hit three sixes and two boundaries in that over which suddenly changed the face of the game.
At this very moment, Stuart Broad came in the limelight as he also has some records. He conceded 36 runs in the 2007 ICC World T20 at the Kingsmead in Durban when India’s left-handed batsman Yuvraj Singh smashed Stuart Broad for six sixes in one over. But this infamous incident hasn’t stopped him from becoming one of the best bowlers in Test cricket in his times.
However, he holds the record of highest runs conceded by a bowler in a single over in T20 internationals. However, after Shivam Dube’s over, ICC shared a post and asked if anyone remembers who gave away the most runs. Broad came in the comments section and said that he doesn’t know the answer.
As far as the series is concerned, India not only whitewashed New Zealand in the five-match T20I series but also became the first team to win it by 5-0 in the shortest format of the game. KL Rahul received the man of the match award for his brilliant 224 runs across five innings at an average of 56. Both the sides will play the three-match ODI series that starts from the 5th of February.
