Sunday’s afternoon WT20 match between Afghanistan and New Zealand broke quite few fans’ hearts in the Indian subcontinent. Not only did the result put a disappointing end on Afghanistan’s high-spirited World Cup campaign; but a several thousand miles away, 1.3 billion Indian supporters were made to endure an emotional heartbreak, as the Blackcaps’ resounding 8-wicket win knocked the final nail in the coffin of India’s dismal 2021 T20 World Cup journey.Â
Social media was galore with memes, posts, and stories dissecting the aftermath of AFG vs NZ result and its unfortunate ramifications for India. While some fans resorted to trolling and joking about India’s plight, there were people who were more sympathetic towards the result and offered commiserations.Â
There were, however, some fans from India, who got a bit too emotionally swayed away with the result. The India Today media conglomerate had one such fan, who got a bit too excited in the heat of the moment and ended up making a disastrous faux-pas on national television.Â
Aaj Tak reporter wrongly claims Afghanistan defeat ends BJP’s campaign
While reviewing the Afghanistan-New Zealand match on the hindi channel Aaj Tak, the presenter covering the show made it her point to stress how crucial the result of the match was for India. She announced, multiple times, that Afghanistan’s defeat had crushed all hopes for India in the ongoing World Cup.

But it would seem that repeating the same headline over and over again made the reporter jumble her words. At one point in the show, the reporter made the claim that Afghanistan’s defeat had crushed the hopes of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), India’s current majority party at the central government.
