The second Test match between Australia and India began on December 6 at the Adelaide Oval. During the match, Australian players were seen wearing black armbands. The reason behind this was to pay tribute to the late Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes.
On November 25, 2014, Hughes was struck on the side of the neck by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match, and two days later, on November 27, he tragically passed away in the hospital. November 27, 2024, marked the 10th anniversary of his passing, and the Australian team wore black armbands during the Adelaide Test in his memory.
Phillip Hughes was only 25 years old and had already secured his place in Australia’s Test and ODI teams. He was regarded as Australia’s next big thing in cricket. However, his tragic death on November 27, 2014, shocked the entire cricketing world. Fans across the globe paid tribute to him, and moments of silence were observed during matches to mourn his demise. In the very next Test match following his death, Hughes was honored as Australia’s 13th player.
Before the ongoing Adelaide Test, Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley spoke about the tribute to Phillip Hughes, saying, “We understand this will be a time of reflection for the many people who knew and admired Phillip Hughes. We wanted to ensure that the Hughes family, particularly, were comfortable with any commemorations and that we celebrate Phillip’s life and incredible achievements appropriately.”
At the end of today’s play, Cricket Australia will release a documentary on Phillip Hughes titled “The Boy from Macksville.”Fans will be able to watch this documentary on Cricket Australia’s website, Fox Cricket, and Channel 7.
