The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced date and venue for the auction ahead of the 2023 edition.
BCCI has also increased the purse size for each team compared to last year in order to allow the franchisees to add a few more players to their squad for IPL 2023.
IPL Auction set to be held in Kochi
The IPL player auction for the 2023 edition will be held in Kochi on December 23. Earlier, the proposed date for the auction was December 16 and Bengaluru was the proposed Venue. However, now the auction has been postponed by a week and scheduled in a new venue i.e. Kochi.
The BCCI was also looking to organize the auction in Istanbul but the plan could not materialise and hence the board came up with a new venue and a postponed date as well. The auction will be a mini-auction as most of the teams will retain most of their players while chipping chopping a but with the squad in order to get some value addition.
Cricket fans are still waiting for the list of released players from each franchise which will be disclosed by them by November 15. The franchisees will try to get the needed funds by releasing the players they don’t want. Each franchise will also get an additional INR 5 crore (approx. US $607,000) to spend at this auction, making the overall purse INR 95 crore (approx. US $11.5 million).
Possibly for the first time, the IPL auction will clash with an international game played by the Indian team as the second test between India and Bangladesh is scheduled on December 22. The IPL 2023 auction will clash with a couple of sessions of the final test between India and Bangladesh.
All eyes will be set on some match-winning allrounders like Ben Stokes, Sam Curran and Cameron Green as it’s expected that teams will shower huge money to add these foreign allrounders to their squad. To increase their funds to buy such powerful allrounders, teams are likely to release a few players who didn’t perform well in the IPL 2022 season ahead of the mini-auction.
