The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to implement ‘Impact Player’ rule in IPL 2023.
BCCI had earlier implemented the rule in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that concluded in November.
‘Impact Player’ rule set to add another layer of thrill to IPL
The impact player rule is the latest addition to game of cricket which allows a team to make a tactical substitution in the middle of the game in each match. As per the rule the Impact Player can replace any member of the initial XI at any point before the end of the 14th over of either innings.
BCCI released a note to all the franchises on Thursday informing them about the new tactical/strategic concept to be added in IPL 2023 edition. “Note that from IPL 2023 Season a tactical/strategic concept will be introduced to add a new dimension to IPL, wherein one substitute player per team will be able to take a more active part in an IPL match. The regulations pertaining to the same will be issued shortly,” BCCI said in its note to the franchises.
According to the new rule, teams need to announce four substitutes in addition to the playing XI. Anyone of these four names can replace any member of the initial XI at any point before the end of the 14th over of either innings. The impact player added will be able to bat and bowl his full quota of overs. However, the impact player rule won’t be imposed on games that are reduced to less than ten overs per side.
The impact player rule has been already tried in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Delhi all-rounder Hrithik Shokeen was the first Impact Player introduced as per the new rule. The BCCI has till now received positive feedback from the coaches and players of the domestic circuit about the impact player rule.
