The IPL is known for big money, big names, and even bigger expectations in the first place. It is obvious that in every season, franchises break their bank in a bid to build strong squads to make a serious bid for the title.
Fans eagerly anticipate teams’ expensive signings, expecting those players to make an immediate impact. But cricket doesn’t always go as planned.
Sometimes, even the most expensive purchases are left on the bench due to team balance, the form of other players, injuries, or even personal reasons. A few high-priced players are still waiting on the sidelines, and this has already sparked a discussion among fans.
Let’s take a look at five of the most expensive players who are yet to play in IPL 2026, and honestly, some of these decisions are quite surprising.
5. Ben Dwarshuis
At number five, we have Ben Dwarshuis, who was picked by Punjab Kings for INR 4.40 crore. That’s a solid investment for a player who brings left-arm pace and experience. But he hasn’t played a single game yet. The reason is simple: it is team combination.
His fellow Australian, Xavier Bartlett, has done well, especially in the death overs. Add to that the presence of Marco Jansen, who offers both bowling and batting. Right now, Dwarshuis is just unlucky. It’s not about his ability; it’s about timing and competition.
4. Mangesh Yadav
At number four is Mangesh Yadav, a name that surprised many during the auction. Royal Challengers Bengaluru spent INR 5.20 crore on an uncapped player, which raised quite a few eyebrows. Yes, he performed well in domestic cricket, especially in the Madhya Pradesh Premier League, but the IPL is a different level. Spending big on uncapped players is always a risk, and if they don’t get chances early, it affects both the player’s confidence and the team’s strategy.

3. Jason Holder
At number three, we have Jason Holder, bought for INR 7 crore by Gujarat Titans. This one feels a bit strange. Holder is an experienced all-rounder who can contribute in all departments. He even came into the tournament in excellent form after performing well in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
But Gujarat’s playing XI is already packed. With players like Jos Buttler, Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada, and Glenn Phillips, there’s just no space left. It shows how tough it is for overseas players in the IPL. Even a player like Holder has to wait.
2. Josh Inglis
At number two is Josh Inglis, who was signed by Lucknow Super Giants for INR 8.60 crore. Unlike others, his absence is not due to form or selection. It’s because of personal reasons. Inglis is getting married, and that has delayed his participation in the tournament. That’s completely understandable.
Life is bigger than cricket. However, from a team’s perspective, it creates a gap, especially after investing such a large amount. LSG already relies heavily on overseas players like Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, and Nicholas Pooran. They would definitely want Inglis available soon.
1. Matheesha Pathirana
Finally, at number one, it’s Matheesha Pathirana. Kolkata Knight Riders spent big to bring him in as their main overseas pacer for INR 18 crore. Given his past performances with Chennai Super Kings, expectations were very high. But injuries delayed his entry into the tournament.
He didn’t get the No Objection Certificate initially from Sri Lanka Cricket. Now that he has been cleared, he is expected to join soon. Both the player and the team will find relief in this situation.
