RCB fans have been waiting for their side to lift an IPL trophy for the last 16 years, and the 2024 season is also not looking promising for them. The Bengaluru-based franchise has had a horrible start to the season, winning only one game in their first 6 outings. Despite having big names in their line-up such as Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, and Glenn Maxwell, the team has found itself at the bottom of the table.

Meanwhile, former England Captain Michael Vaughan explained why RCB has failed to lift a single trophy in the last 16 seasons, and the same trend is continuing in IPL 17 as well. Vaughan has blamed RCB management for failing to build a proper XI, as they heavily rely on individuals.

Michael Vaughan on the curious case of RCB

In a YouTube podcast with Ranveer Allahbadia, Vaughan shared his thoughts on the curious case of Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Vaughan emphasized that RCB has roped in big names over the years, but that doesn’t guarantee a title.

“What I like about the fact the RCB have never won is it proves to me that team sport is not just about individuals. You can go and buy all the biggest individual names and put them into a team but it doesn’t mean you’re going to win and it’s been proven at the RCB”, said Michael Vaughan.

“They’ve signed some incredible players – AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Faf – unbelievable players. But it tells you that unless you get the whole team operating, with every single player understanding their roles and identifying different roles, and it might be that you have to rejig your team slightly just to allow someone else to flourish in a different position, I don’t see the RCB doing that”, Vaughan added.

Vaughan said that RCB has great players, but the management lacks team ethic, culture, and hasn’t identified player roles perfectly; without these, winning trophies is unlikely. “I don’t see RCB trying anything different”, the former English captain said.

Vaughan’s words may sting RCB fans, but he is indeed correct. Despite Virat Kohli currently holding the orange cap, RCB are the bottom-dwellers this season. The Challengers haven’t functioned as a cohesive unit in IPL 2024 so far. Their bowling lineup appears very weak, and star players like Glenn Maxwell and the 17.5 crore-buy Cameron Green have yet to deliver.
