The umpiring in the second leg of the IPL 2021 has not been up to the standards of the league. This was again seen in the PBKS vs RCB encounter on Sunday. The on-field umpire turned down a caught-behind appeal of the PBKS side when Devdutt Padikkal was batting on 35. The things got worse as when it was referred to the third umpire with the help of DRS, the batsman was still given ‘not out’, even after a clear spike could be seen on the UltraEdge.
In another such instance, when KL Rahul was batting against KKR on Friday, Rahul Tripathi grabbed a catch off KL’s bat. The on-field umpire referred the catch to the Third Umpire to review whether it was taken cleanly. Surprisingly the Third Umpire ruled KL ‘not out’ stating that the ball had touched the ground. Meanwhile, the majority of the experts and viewers were of the opinion that Tripathi had his fingers well under the ball and it was clear out. Former Cricketer Saiyami Kher has taken a dig at the Third Umpires after such terrible decisions in the UAE leg.

The league stage of this IPL season is into its closing stage. With three teams already qualified for the play-offs, only a single spot is left for four teams to fight for. The remaining matches of the league have hence become much more interesting. With every game being ‘do or die’ for some of the teams, some really close and nail-biting matches are on the cards. The umpiring in this case becomes a very important aspect. A wrong decision might cost an entire match to the teams which in turn will end their chances of qualification.
