Captaining an IPL side is not as glamorous as it looks from the outside. It is quite a tough job because every match comes with pressure. Moreover, every decision is judged instantly.

In fact, there is very little time to recover from mistakes. Even experienced leaders can struggle to keep things together in a tournament where momentum shifts quickly.

That is why winning the IPL as a captain is a big achievement. But doing it in your very first season in charge is rare. It usually takes time to understand a team, build trust, and figure out what works. These four captains didn’t have that luxury. They stepped in and got it right straight away, each in their own way.

Here’s a closer look at the four players who managed to win the IPL in their debut season as captain.

1. Shane Warne – Rajasthan Royals – IPL 2008

Back in 2008, most people didn’t expect Rajasthan Royals to do anything special. The squad didn’t look strong compared to others. There were bigger names in other teams, and Rajasthan looked like they would struggle.

But Warne changed that quickly. He didn’t try to copy anyone. He built a simple plan and stuck to it. He trusted young Indian players and gave them freedom. That decision made a huge difference. The likes of Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja played a fearless brand of cricket because their captain backed them.

What stood out about Shane Warne was how calm he looked during matches. He had immense potential to read situations well. On top of that, he made smart bowling changes when it mattered the most. Rajasthan didn’t panic when the games got close.

The final against Chennai Super Kings was tight. However, Rajasthan held their nerve and came out on top. That win still feels so special because it came from a team that no one really believed in. The Royals won the game in the last ball and clinched the inaugural edition by 3 wickets.

2. Rohit Sharma – Mumbai Indians – IPL 2013

Rohit Sharma becoming captain of Mumbai Indians in 2013 was not something planned from the start. He took over midway in place of Ricky Ponting. The team was not playing badly, but it needed direction.

Rohit didn’t try to make big changes. He focused on keeping things steady, and his calm approach helped the team settle in the first place. They knew their roles, and there was enough clarity in how the team wanted to play.

One of the key factors was how he used his bowlers. Lasith Malinga was used smartly in pressure situations, and it paid off. Rohit also contributed with the bat when it mattered.

By the time the final came, Mumbai looked confident. They didn’t look like a team under pressure. That win was important because it changed the way people saw Mumbai Indians. Those were signs that Rohit had the temperament to lead by example, and the rest is history. Mumbai Indians won by 23 runs in the showdown.

3. Hardik Pandya – Gujarat Titans – IPL 2022

When Gujarat Titans came into the IPL in 2022, there was curiosity but not too much confidence from fans. A new team usually takes time to settle. On top of that, Hardik Pandya was leading for the first time and was coming back from injuries.

But from the start, Gujarat looked clear in their approach. Hardik kept things simple. He didn’t try to overdo anything. The team had balance, and the players actually knew what was expected.

Hardik also stepped up himself and scored runs consistently while also chipping in with the ball. More importantly, he stayed calm in pressure moments, and that reflected in the way the team played. Finishing at the top in their first season itself was impressive. Winning the title made it even bigger. It didn’t feel like a new team struggling to adjust.

It felt like a team that knew exactly what it was doing. That comes down to leadership, and Hardik got it right in his first attempt. The Ahmedabad-based franchise won by 7 wickets with 11 balls remaining and won their first title.

4. Rajat Patidar – Royal Challengers Bengaluru – IPL 2025

This one stands out for a different reason. Royal Challengers Bengaluru had waited for years without a title. They had strong teams in the past but couldn’t finish the job. In 2025, things didn’t start smoothly. An injury to Faf du Plessis meant a sudden change in leadership, and Rajat Patidar was given the captaincy just before the season.

There were doubts, and that was expected. But Patidar didn’t let that affect him. He trusted his players and avoided overcomplicating things. He was consistent and played important knocks. He handled the pressure well and delivered the goods when it mattered most. In fact, what actually stood out was his decision-making in big matches.

He didn’t hesitate to take risks when it mattered. In the knockout stages, those decisions worked in RCB’s favour. The final win turned out to be super emotional, not just for the team but for the fans as well. The cricket fraternity knows that ending such a long wait is never easy. Moreover, doing it as a first-time captain makes it even more special. RCB won by six runs to win their maiden title.
