T20 World Cup 2026: Heartbreak turns to anger as Pakistan fans smash TV after crushing defeat to India

There are defeats, and then there are India–Pakistan defeats. The difference is not in the points table but in the silence that follows, the broken conversations, and sometimes, the broken television sets. Pakistan’s heavy loss to India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup did not end with the final wicket. It continued in living rooms where fans had spent hours believing the game would turn. The viral video clip showed a group of supporters smashing their TV in frustration as the reality of another painful night sank in.

One could actually understand the emotion even without watching the full match. That slow drift from hope to helplessness is familiar to anyone who has followed this rivalry. At the start, every run is celebrated. Every dot ball brings energy. Then the asking rate climbs, the shots stop coming, and the room slowly goes quiet. By the time India had complete control of the game, the result felt inevitable.

For the Pakistan national cricket team, the problem was not just the defeat but the manner of it. Big matches demand presence. They demand a fight in small phases, a sharp spell with the ball, a fearless power play, and a partnership that shifts pressure. None of that lasted long enough. The chase never had rhythm, and with every passing over, the body language told its own story.

On the other side, the India national cricket team played like a team that understood the occasion. They did not rush. They did not panic. They stretched the key moments and forced Pakistan to play catch-up cricket. Batting first, Team India posted 175 for the loss of 7 wickets in their designated quota of 20 overs. In response, the Green Shirts were skittled out for just 114. India won the game by 61 runs in Colombo.

And that is what hurts fans the most- not just losing, but feeling that the contest slipped away too early. The viral video of the shattered television is dramatic, but it is also symbolic. In the subcontinent, cricket is not background noise. People arrange their day around these matches. Friends gather. WhatsApp groups stay active ball by ball. Superstitions come out. The same chair, the same jersey, the same place in front of the screen.

So when the team collapses, that emotional investment has nowhere to go. This is not the first time such reactions have surfaced, and it will not be the last. Because this rivalry does not allow neutral feelings. It is either chest-thumping joy or complete frustration. There is no middle ground.

What makes this episode more telling is the expectation Pakistan carried into the match. Fans believed this was the night the script would change. When that belief broke, the reaction became raw and unfiltered. But here is the other side of the story, the part that never trends.

The same fans who expressed anger will return for the next game. They will again sit in front of the television. They will again argue about team selection. They will again believe. That is how cricket works in this part of the world. Passion does not switch off. It resets. For Pakistan, the tournament is not over. One strong performance can shift the mood instantly. For India, this win is another reminder of how well they handle high-pressure nights.

After winning the game, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav said, “I think this is for India (smiles in his trademark style). But yeah, it’s… we played the same brand of cricket, what we wanted to play. I told you at the toss as well. I think batting first was a better option on this wicket. And the way Ishan batted and he was batting in the last few games, and also in the domestic circuit, he batted the same way and took the team ahead.”
