T20 World Cup 2028 May Expand to 32 Nations: Reports
As per reports, at the recent ICC Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Singapore, the apex cricket body discussed a huge expansion for the 2028 edition of the T20 World Cup. If it’s approved, then this change could increase the number of participating teams from 20 to a staggering 32.
Then, it would make the largest T20 World Cup in history. Before we reach 2028, fans can look forward to the next edition of the tournament in early 2026. India and Sri Lanka will co-host the 2026 T20 World Cup between February and March. That edition will feature 20 teams, the most ever in a T20 World Cup until now.
As per Forbes’ report, the ICC has already formed a six-member working group to study the feasibility of expanding the T20 World Cup tourney. New Zealand’s Roger Twose leads this task force, which also includes representatives from influential cricketing nations like India, Australia, and England, respectively.
The group’s main job is to figure out if expanding to 32 teams can actually work without affecting the tournament’s quality or structure.
This proposal comes in the wake of promising performances from emerging cricketing nations. Recently, Italy made history by qualifying for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which marked its debut on the world stage. Additionally, cricket’s steady rise in countries like the United States and other non-traditional markets encouraged the ICC to adopt a broader, more inclusive strategy.
Thereby, by adding 12 more teams to the tournament, the ICC aims to offer greater opportunities to Associate Nations. But making room for 32 teams won’t be easy at all because organizing that many matches, finding enough venues, and making sure everything, from travel to TV coverage, will take serious planning.
Host countries will need solid infrastructure to handle the bigger crowds and tighter schedules. So, before saying yes to the expansion, the ICC needs to think through all the possible hurdles. Still, the idea represents a major leap toward the globalization of cricket.

T20 World Cup tournament results
Team India clinched the inaugural tournament in 2007/08 by beating their archrivals, Pakistan, in a dramatic final held in South Africa. In the following edition in 2009, Pakistan made a strong comeback by lifting the trophy in England. They beat Sri Lanka to win their maiden title. The 2010 tournament saw England claim their first-ever ICC title as they triumphed in the West Indies.
The 2012/13 edition brought glory to the West Indies, who stunned hosts Sri Lanka to clinch the title. Sri Lanka, however, bounced back in 2013/14 by defeating India in Bangladesh to finally lay their hands on the trophy. In 2015/16, the West Indies once again showcased their brilliance in the shortest format by winning their second title.
Australia clinched their maiden T20 World Cup title by beating New Zealand in the final held in the UAE and Oman. In 2022/23, England emerged victorious for the second time. They got the better of Pakistan to lift the trophy. Team India beat South Africa by 7 runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 edition in a nail-biting encounter to win their second title.
