India-A is currently facing South Africa-A for a three match long unofficial test series which is being hosted at Bloemfontein, South Africa. Currently, the first match is being played. SA seems to be marginally ahead as this piece is written.
Pieter Malan, Zorzi and Easwaran have all made headlines for making individual centuries. However, Rahul Chahar -India’s 22-year-old leg-break bowler- has risen to be the game’s talking point. He is in the news for his pathetic behavior, apparently.
Rahul Chahar throws his sunglasses after umpire neglects his appeal
The event occured in the second session of the second day’s play. Rahul was bowling his 25th over of the game and Sinethemba Qeshila was on strike. He bowled a good-length ball on middle stump, which Qeshila missed. He was struck on his pads right in front of the sticks and had Rahul excited.
Accordingly, Rahul appealed for an LBW but the umpire didn’t think it was out. Chahar had appealed twice and was left frustrated when the umpire didn’t agree with him. So he lost his cool and threw his sunglasses on the ground. Later, Rahul even went up to confront the umpire in un-polite manner. Here’s the video which features the full incident.

There was surety in Rahul’s appeal and it resulted in an unsolicited behavior. Nonetheless, the case differed in reality. Personally, I believe that the ball was pitching outside leg. It was also going over the stumps. Commentators also opined that height was an issue there. One of them spoke about it on air. Whilst doing so, he also lambasted Chahar’s behavior. Here’s his full statement:
“I think it was a bit high. That I’m afraid is reportable dissent from Chahar. He appealed twice and then threw the glasses on the outside, on the ground.” His commentating partner also termed the ball “too high” showing agreement with his pal.
Rahul bowled 28.3 overs and his solitary wicket cost 125 runs. His whole spell included zero maidens. This instance of poor performance comes after his disastrous T20 WC campaign. It’s likely that his failures have all added up and culminated at the frustrating behaviour which was shown during his ongoing India-A assignment.
