In the Indian Premier League, for a player, staying with a single franchise is never easy. A player’s fate depends not just on performance but also on the IPL’s retention policies. Deepak Chahar’s journey was no different. After a seven-year-long journey with Chennai Super Kings, he had to move to Mumbai Indians.
At the IPL 2025 auction, CSK made a strong effort to bring him back, but Mumbai Indians remained aggressive in the bidding war. Eventually, CSK had to bow out after exceeding their budget, allowing MI to secure Chahar’s services.
Malti Chahar’s playful ‘Kattappa’ post on brother Deepak Chahar
On Sunday, Chahar made his MI debut against his former franchise, CSK, and delivered a decent all-round performance. He scored 28 runs off 15 balls to give MI’s innings a solid finish and later bowled two overs, picking up one wicket.
Meanwhile, his sister, Malti Chahar, took to Instagram to humorously refer to him as Kattappa. She shared a meme featuring the famous Baahubali scene where Kattappa backstabs Baahubali. The meme is playfully suggesting that Deepak has backstabbed his former franchise by performing against them.

However, despite no longer being part of Chennai Super Kings, Deepak Chahar still shares a strong bond with the franchise. During yesterday’s match, he was seen joking around with his former captain, MS Dhoni. As soon as Thala walked out to bat, Chahar playfully stood in front of him and started clapping in a fun manner. After the match, Dhoni was also spotted playfully hitting Chahar with his bat.

After the IPL 2025 auction, Deepak Chahar had expressed gratitude towards the CSK franchise. He thanked them for bidding up to ₹9 crore despite having a limited purse, which showed how badly the team wanted him back. In an interview in December 2024, the 32-year-old all-rounder also mentioned that he wanted to play for CSK in IPL 2025, as MS Dhoni has supported him from the very beginning.
