Mumbai Indians are in a real spot of bother in the ongoing edition of the IPL. It very much seems that their campaign is slipping away fast. As things stand, nothing seems to be going in their favour.
On May 2, things got even worse when Mumbai Indians suffered a heavy eight-wicket defeat against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The loss kept MI stuck at ninth place in the table with just four points. Their net run rate of -0.803 tells its own story. MI have simply not clicked as a team this season.
They have now lost seven of their last eight matches. That is not just poor form; that is a complete breakdown in rhythm and confidence. Under Hardik Pandya, the team has looked out of sync. The batting has failed in key moments, and the bowling has not delivered under pressure.
Against CSK, MI chose to bat first. But once again, they could not build a strong total. They managed only 159 for seven, which was never going to be enough on that pitch.
There was one bright spot, though. Naman Dhir played a fighting knock. He got a lifeline early when Will Jacks dropped him on 19. After that, Dhir made sure he made it count. He scored 57 runs with four boundaries and three sixes. But apart from him, no one really stepped up.
Chasing 160, CSK made it look easy. Ruturaj Gaikwad led from the front with a solid fifty. Kartik Sharma supported him well with another half-century. They chased the target comfortably with 11 balls to spare. MI bowlers had no answers.
Now, MI will face Lucknow Super Giants next at the Wankhede Stadium. That match is not just important; it is almost a do-or-die situation.
Can Mumbai Indians still qualify for IPL playoffs?
The short answer is yes, but it is very difficult in the first place. MI’s qualification chances are now hanging by a thread. They no longer control their own destiny. Even if they win all their remaining matches, there is no guarantee they will qualify.
If they somehow reach 14 points, they will still need other results to go their way. Teams above them must lose matches. And more importantly, MI must improve their net run rate significantly.

History also does not give them much hope. In IPL seasons with 10 teams, like 2011, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and now 2026, teams usually need more than 14 points to qualify. Only once has a team qualified with 14 points. That happened in 2024 when Royal Challengers Bengaluru edged past CSK on net run rate.
So right now, MI are in a tight corner. They need to win every single game from here. Not just winning, they need big wins to boost their net run rate. At the same time, they must hope that other teams slip up.
There is no room for mistakes anymore. Mumbai Indians still have a chance, but they have made life extremely hard for themselves. If they want to stay alive in IPL 2026, they need to fix their team combination quickly before it is too late.
The five-time IPL champions will look to win their remaining games. They will lock horns with the Lucknow Super Giants at their home venue on May 4, Monday. After that, they will play against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 10, Sunday, at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
Later, they will cross swords with Punjab Kings on May 14, Thursday and then they will play against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on May 20 and Rajasthan Royals on May 24 at home.
