The IPL 2026 match between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings should have been remembered only for the runs and the young talent on display. Instead, it started with a moment that felt completely avoidable and honestly a bit embarrassing for a league of this level.
Ayush Mhatre walked in after Sanju Samson’s dismissal and was all set to face Xavier Bartlett. However, what followed was confusion more than anything else. As it turned out, his bat failed the gauge test. Fine, that can happen, but then the replacement bat also failed, which became a major talking point because it did not feel normal and it felt like something was off, and it was.
IPL 2026 Drama: Ayush Mhatre Stopped Twice Over Bat Test Error
The umpire checked the original bat again and realized the mistake. The gauge had not been used properly in the first place, and, in fact, the error came from the official and not the player. That is where the frustration comes in. This is the IPL, not a local tournament. Basic checks like this should be done right the first time. Even Ian Bishop sounded surprised on air when he pointed out that the gauge was upside down.
These are small things, but they matter. Fans expect sharp officiating in a top league. One simple error turned into a delay and unnecessary drama.
This kind of situation does more damage than people think. It breaks the flow of the game. It puts unnecessary pressure on a batter, especially someone as young as Mhatre. An 18-year-old should focus on batting, not on whether his bat is suddenly “illegal” because of a handling mistake.
But this is where Mhatre stood out. The incident didn’t affect him one bit as he played with intent from the start. He attacked the bowlers and took control of the game. In the process, he chipped in with 73 off 43 balls. The right-handed batter constructed the innings with the help of five sixes and a strike rate close to 170.
In the process, he became the youngest player to score an IPL fifty at Chepauk at 18 years and 261 days. That says a lot about his temperament. Many young players take time to settle. Mhatre looks ready already.
He also joins names like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Prithvi Shaw in the list of players with multiple fifty-plus scores before turning 19. That is serious company. On top of that, his numbers since his debut show consistency. He mustered 300 runs in just nine innings with a high strike rate, which is indeed worth applauding.
CSK mustered 209/5 in their quota of 20 overs in their den. Shivam Dube played a solid supporting role wherein he scored an unbeaten 45 off 27, including 5 fours and a six. Sarfaraz Khan added quick runs at the end where he scored 32 off 12, laced with six fours and a six. Punjab did pick two wickets through Vijaykumar Vyshak, but they could not control the momentum.
On the other side of the coin, the Mohali-based franchise chased down the target in 18.4 overs and won the game by five wickets. Captain Shreyas Iyer was the pick of the batters as he chipped in with 50 off 29 balls, laced with 4 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 172.4.
CSK started their IPL campaign with a defeat as they surrendered at the hands of Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. The five-time IPL champions lost their next game at home. They will look to bounce back in the third game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which is slated to be held on April 5, Sunday, at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
