Ishan Kishan, who was axed from BCCI’s central contracts due to his absence in the previous Ranji Trophy season, is now set to take domestic cricket seriously. As reported by Cricbuzz, the keeper-batter has made himself available for the upcoming domestic season and is set to play for Jharkhand. He is also being considered for the captaincy of the team.
Ishan Kishan likely to lead Jharkhand in 2024-2025 domestic season
Ishan Kishan, who has been missing out on international cricket since November 2023, is eyeing a comeback. The 26-year-old cricketer has informed JSCA of his availability for the upcoming season. The 2024-25 domestic season in India will begin with the Duleep Trophy; however, Kishan is unlikely to be considered for the trophy by BCCI selectors.
So, Ishan Kishan’s domestic season is likely to begin with the Ranji Trophy, which is scheduled to start in October. Later, Jharkhand will play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in November and December. Sourabh Tiwary led Jharkhand last season. However, as Tiwary has now retired, they need a new skipper, and Ishan Kishan’s arrival will likely fill that role.
Earlier, Ishan Kishan was counseled by the national selectors but is unlikely to be considered for any BCCI team until he proves himself in domestic cricket. The roadmap for Kishan’s return to the Indian team will require consistent performances in domestic matches. Shreyas Iyer faced a similar hiatus; however, his participation in the Ranji Trophy last season led the BCCI selectors to include him in the ongoing India vs Sri Lanka ODI series.
The decision of Ishan Kishan opting for domestic cricket came after the national selectors’ advice, and his well-wishers have encouraged him to sweat it out in the domestic circuit. Currently, domestic cricket is the only platform for Ishan Kishan to catch the selectors’ eyes. He just can’t wait for the IPL season and hope to be picked for the Indian team based on his 2-month league performance.
